The Frederick National Laboratory supports the next generation of biomedical researchers. We participate in fellowships and training opportunities for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students as well as recent graduates. The Frederick National Laboratory hires students with an undergraduate and/or graduate degree to work in our laboratories as fellows. These positions offer early career researchers the chance to participate in biomedical projects.
We have established a number of academic partnerships that include training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students from our partner institutions. This training program is overseen by our Partnership Development Office through the Academic Engagement program.

Our investigators serve as mentors in internship programs within the National Institutes of Health Office of Intramural Training and Education and the National Cancer Institute at Frederick. Students can apply to these opportunities outside the Frederick National Laboratory for a chance to work in one of our laboratories.
Undergraduate & graduate students: National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program
Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply to participate in the summer internship program in biomedical research, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. The Summer Internship Program is a paid internship and opportunities are offered at various National Institutes of Health locations. The National Cancer Institute at Frederick welcomes eligible college, graduate and professional students to spend eight to 10 weeks conducting biomedical research or with programs in support of biomedical research, such as:
- bioinformatics
- data analysis
- statistics
- public affairs and communications
- scientific education outreach
- project management
Summer internships may include placements with the Frederick National Laboratory.
When completing your application you will be able to select any and all locations for which you wish to be considered. Students interested in a Frederick placement must specify the location in their application. Some points to note:
- The internship is highly competitive. Over the past several years, fewer than 20% of applicants were selected for the program. You can improve your chances of being selected by contacting individual investigators with whom you would like to work.
- This is not to suggest that you should send a general email to scores of investigators. Such an inquiry is not likely to be successfully received.
- Instead, identify four or five investigators at the institute you wish to work and whose science interests you. Learn about their specific area of research so you can address it and communicate in your email your interest in working with the investigator and his or her team. High school students: Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program
The Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program at the National Cancer Institute at Frederick is for rising high school seniors to conduct research or perform administrative functions in a scientific environment. Application is made during the junior year.
