The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research and Georgetown University will present the second annual Scientific Partners Distinguished Lecture Series featuring five seminars by leading scientists from both organizations. The 2021 series is open to the public and will be completely virtual. Participation details for each seminar will be announced prior to the event.

“The Frederick National Laboratory enjoys a rewarding partnership with Georgetown University, engaging professionals and students alike,” said Leonard Freedman, Ph.D., Frederick National Laboratory’s chief science officer. “We hope this continuing scientific exchange will give rise to new collaborations and initiatives between our respective institutions.”

“The breadth of the areas covered by the lecture series is a stimulus not only to the Georgetown faculty and Frederick scientists, but also to our exceptional students who represent the scientific workforce of the future,” said Spiros Dimolitsas, Ph.D., Georgetown’s senior vice president for research, and chief technology officer.

The kickoff presentation on Tuesday, Jan. 26 will feature Christopher Albanese, Ph.D., on the topic, “Mechanisms Underlying Drug Resistance in GI Cancers.” Albanese is professor of oncology, radiology and pathology at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. He also serves as director of the Preclinical Imaging Research Laboratory and executive director of the Center for Translational Imaging.

On Tuesday, Feb. 9, Deus Bazira, Dr.PH., M.P.H., M.B.A. will present “Optimizing Data-to-Care Outcomes to Achieve Epidemic Control in Haiti and Cameroon.” Bazira is co-director of Georgetown’s Center for Global Health Practice and Impact and associate professor of medicine at the School of Medicine.

Frederick National Laboratory scientists will present the remaining seminars in the series. On Tuesday, March 2, Jeffrey Lifson, M.D, will discuss “Viral Vignettes from the AIDS and Cancer Virus Program.” Lifson is director of the AIDS and Cancer Virus Program.

An overview of the National Cryo-EM Facility (NCEF) will be presented on Tuesday, March 26. Speakers are NCEF senior microscopist Ulrich Baxa, Ph.D. and scientist Jana Ognjenovic, Ph.D.

On Friday, May 7, Ligia Pinto, Ph.D. will present “Immunogenicity of HPV Vaccines: What Have We Learned and Where Are We Going?” Pinto is director of the Vaccine, Immunity and Cancer Program.
