After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2009, Dr. Del Prete joined the AIDS and Cancer Virus Program (ACVP) at Frederick National Laboratory as a post-doctoral fellow in Dr. Jeff Lifson’s Retroviral Pathogenesis Section. In 2012, Dr. Del Prete was appointed head of the Nonhuman Primate Research Support Core, a position which he still holds. In 2017, Dr. Del Prete’s role within the ACVP expanded to encompass responsibility for all aspects of NHP research when he became Associate Director for NHP Resources. One year later in 2018, Dr. Del Prete established the Viral Persistence Section when he became a principal investigator in the program. Starting with his Ph.D. dissertation work, Dr. Del Prete conducted HIV/AIDS research for more than15 years. In that time, his work has emphasized the improved characterization, development, and use of NHP models to explore the complex relationship between primate lentiviral infections, such as HIV, and their hosts.
