Dr. Matsuo investigates the structure and function of proteins and their interactions with DNA and RNA using NMR, X-ray crystallography, and cryo-electron microscopy. His current research focuses on elucidating the structural basis of APOBEC3 proteins’ single-stranded DNA cytosine deaminase activity, which plays key roles in HIV-1 restriction, tumor development, and cancer drug resistance. He joined the Basic Research Program at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research in 2015.
