The Frederick National Laboratory is dedicated to improving human health through the discovery and innovation in the biomedical sciences, focusing on cancer, AIDS and emerging infectious diseases.

The Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) directorate works collaboratively and helps to fulfill the mission of Frederick National Laboratory in the areas of biomedical informatics and data science by developing and applying world leading data science and computing technologies to basic and applied biomedical research challenges, supporting critical operations, developing and delivering national data resources, and employing leading-edge software and data science.

The Advanced Biomedical and Computational Science (ABCS) group is a part of BIDS within Leidos Biomedical Research as a technological hub of translational scientists with expertise in structural biology, biology, chemistry, imaging, and informatics. ABCS develops state-of-the-art technologies in large-scale data modeling, analysis, and integration and supports the scientific research at the Frederick National Lab by helping translate scientific questions to technical solutions for cancer and biomedical research.


  • Lead the variant annotation and curation efforts for ABCS

  • Provide scientific and technical guidance for bioinformatics and data science efforts at ABCS

  • Design and architect solutions for complex data integration aspects of cancer research

  • Develop custom data querying/mining pipelines for integrating clinical and genomic data, multi-level biological annotations and information from other knowledge mining applications

  • Coordinate with the other technical and nontechnical teams in building public-facing applications and services (APIs) for a variety of users in the cancer research field

  • Work closely with other FNL and NCI teams to coordinate activities and develop collaborative projects


To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency

  • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible bioinformatics experience

  • Deep knowledge in next generation sequencing and variant analysis workflows

  • Expertise in developing bioinformatics analysis workflows

  • Experience in building robust data pipelines and services

  • Knowledge in scripting languages and Unix/Linux OS scripting

  • Strong knowledge of algorithms and one or more programing languages such as Python, Java, or C++

  • Strong drive and initiative to explore new territories in data and knowledge mining

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technologies according to the changing needs of the project and organization

  • Able to work on initiatives independently and in a highly collaborative environment

  • Has strong work ethics, organized, detail oriented and focused on execution

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Knowledge of agile web development, experience in developing data integration and visualization tools

  • Clinical sequencing and analysis expertise

  • Knowledge of NLP applications

  • Leadership characteristics – Able to mentor and direct junior analysts
