The AIDS and Cancer Virus Program (ACVP) is an integrated, multidisciplinary program that performs cutting-edge research in an effort to improve our understanding of AIDS-associated disease, including studies intended to facilitate the improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment of HIV infection and AIDS. The Program consists of several research Sections headed by Principal Investigators, whose work spans from fundamental molecular virology through in vitro studies, to in vivo studies in non-human primate (NHP) models. The ACVP also has eight Research Support Core Groups (Cores) that perform independent research and provide critical and often unique technical support capabilities to ACVP laboratories and other laboratories within the NCI and NIH, and to extramural investigators.


The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative group under the leadership of Dr. Claire Deleage in the Tissue Analyses Core within theAIDS and Cancer Virus Program. Our laboratory has unique expertise in various tissue staining protocols such as immunohistochemistry, single and multiplex immunofluorescence assay (IFA), next generation in situ hybridization (RNAscope and DNAscope), laser capture microdissection, and the development of new analyses tools (including novel AI approaches). The TAC performs both independent research and numerous collaborative research studies that we support in using these the state-of-the-art image analyses.Main Duties and Responsibilities will be:

  • Perform histology and in situ hybridization on non-human primate and human tissues
  • Develop, validate, and deploy multiplex IFA panels (TSA and CODEX approaches) to address fundamental questions to basic HIV biology like mucosal transmission, reservoir dynamics and HIV cure
  • Drive the development of novel image analysis solutions, as well as work closely in collaboration with machine learning scientists inside FNL to develop new methods of data analysis suitable for the multi-parametric datasets in multiplex IF
  • Utilize microscopy and digital pathology methods for staining quality control and analysis
  • Work with intramural and extramural collaborators to assess their needs in tissue analyses to conduct their research
  • Develop and validate new assays
  • Publish our research in high impact journals

The key responsibility of the applicant will be to envision, plan, perform, and present study results and development of new tissue assays to the research community at large. We anticipate the successful candidate to be diligent, capable of working well within a team, and work on numerous projects at once. Although the successful candidate will be required to perform wet lab experiments directly, they will also be responsible for developing new analysis tools and helping with overall research design and experimental approaches. Furthermore, the candidate will be expected to provide necessary interpretation of the data and prepare data for publication in peer-reviewed journals.


To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a PhD degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or eight (8) years of related experience. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • No work experience required with a Doctorate degree
  • Ability to understand and analyze data from complex experimental designs
  • Record scientific achievements including publication of completed studies
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Possession of a PhD degreein Virology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, or related fieldfrom an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation
  • Experience in histology and microscopy
  • Basic understanding of HIV biology and pathology
  • Experience in image analyses
  • Basic knowledge in tissue histology with focus on lymphoid tissues
