PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease. The Gnotobiotics Facility (GF) team within the LASP assists research efforts focused on the role of microbiota in inflammation, pathogenesis, and anti-tumoral response.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

As an Animal Caretaker II/III, you will be working with a diverse team in a state-of-the-art animal facility housing germ-free and gnotobiotic mice. Your role will a variety of tasks associated with general laboratory animal care in support of basic and translational research performed by senior technical staff. Responsibilities include feeding and specialized maintenance of laboratory rodents. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Feeding and housing of laboratory animals in conventional cages, flexible film isolators and Biocontainment racks
  • General laboratory animal facility housekeeping
  • Keeping inventory of, ordering, and stocking supplies
  • Preparing facility and specialized supplies for maintaining germ-free and gnotobiotic animals
  • Operating cage washer, autoclaves, and other animal support equipment
  • Performing health and mortality checks and making routine observations of animals
  • Observing animals for any changes in behavior or signs of clinical illness and reporting observations to the appropriate personnel
  • Collecting fecal and environmental samples for diagnostic testing
  • Keeping accurate electronic and written records
  • Strict adherence to specific SOPs
  • Utilizing computer skills for email, training, and basic data entry
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • This is a change-in facility
  • Work schedule may include weekend and holiday hours

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

This position may be filled with a Animal Caretaker II/III commensurate with the selected candidates experience

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Requires an 8th grade education or higher
    • Animal Caretaker II -In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of one (1) year of job-related animal care experience and ALAT certification or- two (2) years laboratory animal care experience. satisfactory completion of an internal competency assessment
    • Animal Caretaker III- In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of five (5) years of job-related animal care experience
  • Requires ALAT certification
  • Ability to keep accurate basic records
  • Very detail oriented
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of computers
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and wear respiratory protective equipment as necessary
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
