Dr. Nathan P. Coussens is the director of the In Vitro Evaluation and Molecular Pharmacology Laboratories at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. The laboratories leverage state-of-the-art approaches and patient-derived tumor models to discover novel targets, evaluate investigational therapeutics, and develop drug combinations to improve treatment of recalcitrant, rare, and neglected cancers.
Previously, he was a senior research scientist at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, where he advanced a diverse portfolio of projects. There, he developed biologically and pharmacologically relevant biochemical and cell-based assays and applied advanced measurement technologies to identify and characterize small-molecule modulators from high-throughput screens.
Coussens is a member of the Frederick National Laboratory Scientific Standards Hub, which strives to increase the reproducibility of biomedical data within the scientific community. He is also a member of the SLAS Technology editorial board and an associate editor and former editor-in-chief of the National Institutes of Health’s Assay Guidance Manual, a growing online e-book of best practices for preclinical assay development and implementation that has become the go-to resource for translational scientists in industry, academia, and research laboratories worldwide.
